Zhang Weichao’s Classroom: How to Choose Socks

Hello everyone, it’s time for another fun sock knowledge class by Zhang Weichao. Today, I will share with you how to choose socks correctly.

1、 Why do socks smell?

Sweat, like saliva, is not necessarily foul smelling!

And foot odor can be understood in this way, foot odor=bacteria+foot sweat. Foot sweat is easy to understand. Not to mention whether you sweat your feet, just wearing socks+shoes is enough to make it easier to sweat, and this humid and hot environment is particularly suitable for the reproduction of microorganisms.

Due to the joint effect of sweat and bacterial microorganisms, it eventually turns into ammonia, acetic acid, isovaleric acid, and other odors with a sour odor.

Anti odor measures can be taken from the following three aspects:

1: Antibacterial, directly killing bacteria and microorganisms;

2: Breathable, relieving and reducing humid and hot environments;

3: Deodorization, sterilization, antibacterial, and bacterial decomposition.

2、 Let’s start with the material to prevent odor

1. Classification of materials

The common ingredients of socks are roughly divided into six categories:

Natural fibers are mainly divided into: cotton, linen, and wool

Chemical fibers are mainly divided into: viscose, polyester, nylon, and acrylic

① Pure cotton

Advantages: Good moisture absorption

Disadvantages: Poor elasticity and moisture conductivity, meaning fast moisture absorption but slow drying

So, people who love to sweat on their feet wear pure cotton socks, and sweat dries slowly. The humid and hot environment is very suitable for microbial growth, and their feet will be very smelly.

Pure cotton may also have the following situations:

Due to poor elasticity, the cuffs of the socks often fall off to the heel or even to the middle of the sole of the foot.

If you’re not sweating, then choosing pure cotton socks is not a problem.

What material of socks is better for sweaty feet?

Answer: Nylon fiber

Cotton fibers are hollow, so they absorb water, while nylon fibers have a shaped structure that helps with moisture removal.

Nylon fiber has excellent wear resistance, moisture absorption, and elasticity, making it a great choice for sports socks.

3. Hemp

Advantages: Wearing it is relatively dry and refreshing

Disadvantage: Poor comfort

4. Adhesive

Good moisture absorption, usually blended with other synthetic fibers to complement each other’s strengths and weaknesses, recommended with modal.

3、 Regarding breathability

Although socks play an important role, they also need to be paired with a pair of non smelly shoes to achieve the best results.

So have you learned these knowledge points about socks?
